Musical Director

Alan Freedman

Appointed Musical Director in May 2019, Alan Freedman was invited to join the Choir two years earlier by the present Chairman and previous Musical Director, David Druce, following a long period of association during which he wrote musical arrangements and trained boy soloists for the Choir.

A lifelong resident of Hendon, Alan has been choirmaster at Hendon United Synagogue since 1988 – a choir he first joined at the age of nine under the direction of the renowned conductor, Lionel Leigh, and the world famous cantor, Rev Moshe Korn. He also conducts the choir at Hendon Adath Yisroeil Congregation, and was choirmaster at Edgware United Synagogue for a time.

A member of the Worshipful Company of Musicians, one of the ancient guilds of the City of London, Alan has worked with a number of famous cantors over the years, including Yosef Malovany, Ben-Zion Miller, Binyamin Muller and Ya’akov Motzen.
