SANDFORD FAMILY CHORAL SCHOLARSHIP
_______________________________________________________________________________________________
The Choir is pleased to announce the Sandford Family Choral Scholarship.
The London Cantorial Singers, an orthodox Jewish male choir, has launched a scholarship fund to give Jewish boys, who love singing, the opportunity to experience high quality choral singing. The successful candidates will be offered professional voice coaching and music training. Candidates must be between 9 to 14 years old and living in the Greater London area.
The Scholarship will be administered by the Musical Director and the Trustees of the Choir. Each recipient of a choral scholarship will receive a maximum of £300.00 worth of professional vocal coaching and coaching in ensemble-singing during their first year.
Choral Scholars will be able to sing as soloists and in ensemble formations, as part of the London Cantorial Singers, at our concerts and other activities.
The London Cantorial Singers has a membership of about 30 members. From time to time we perform with guest national and Internationally-acclaimed Cantors. The choir performs regularly throughout the year in various Jewish communities, London Boroughs, Regional, National, and international events. We have several concerts a year and our performances are often recorded for Social Media and Choir marketing purposes. We offer plenty of high-quality performance experience for any young person interested in choral singing. We have a Safeguarding policy, which can be found on our website at www.tlcs.org.uk
Our Musical Director and Chairman have current enhanced DBS certifications.
If you are a full-time school student aged 9 to 14 and have a love of singing, your parents could apply to us for you to be awarded one of our Choral Scholarships. As a Choral Scholar you are a full member of the choir, singing in a fun, supportive environment, while strengthening your core skills as a singer improving your sight-reading, and building your vocal technique.
A Choral Scholarship is a wonderful way to gain experience of singing at a high standard in a choir that covers a broad repertoire. It is also excellent preparation for any young musician wanting to pursue music further, especially singers who may wish to apply for choral awards at university or prepare for professional choral singing.
As a Choral Scholar, you would be expected to demonstrate commitment and musicianship, attending some rehearsals and vocal coaching throughout the year. The choir rehearses every Wednesday evening between 8:00pm and 10:00pm in North West London, currently at Belmont United Synagogue in Stanmore, Middlesex. The Coaching sessions will take place with an approved voice coach.
Auditions will be conducted by Alan Freedman, the Musical Director, and/or David Druce, who is the choir’s Assistant Musical Director and Chairman.
Applications will be on a “first come first served” basis and requests should be made by email to David Druce at chairman@tlcs.org.uk.
The Sandford family have generously donated to the Scholarship fund in acknowledgement of the help and encouragement given to their son Rafi, our former young soloist, in bringing on his singing abilities throughout the duration of his time in the Choir.
Rafi Sandford says, “I wanted to give back and say thank you to the choir that supported me so much to develop my singing and we also wanted to help in a small way to assist training future young soloists.”
Our Patron Henry Grunwald OBE KC says, “Rafi Sandford has developed so much by working with the choir as a young soloist and these choral scholarships are a wonderful initiative to enable others to do the same.”
Our Patron Rabbi Shisler says, “For any youngster who loves singing this is a wonderful and rare opportunity to train and sing with one of London’s leading choirs. It is a chance to gain skills that will enhance their musical knowledge that they will carry with them throughout their lives.”
